This is a true story! One more than
one occasion my school district conspired to coerce my money from me through
sloppy bookkeeping methods. The science-fiction title in question
was returned heartily on time when I borrowed it and the next year when
I went to registration day to get my parking pass they told me I never
brought it back and wanted to make me pay for the whole thing! I
told them they'd damn well better go check their library again and make
sure it was there. They found it with a, "Sorry, we were wrong,"
but I was naturually suspicious. There had been a previous occasion
where they told me I never returned a book, and I told them they were full
of shit, and they assured me I was in fact the one who was full of shit,
so I went right up to the bookcase and pulled out the very book in question
and showed it to them. From that point on every time a librarian
walked by, I would narrow my eyes.
